There is no statute of limitations on cancel culture. Las Vegas Raiders head coach, Jon Gruden, sent an e-mail 10 years ago in which he used an alleged racial trope and now they are coming for him. Andy Warhol famously said that everyone achieves 15 minutes of fame but a more accurate sentiment for today’s stupid times is: every 15 minutes, someone gets cancelled.”
The Wall Street Journal broke this story but they have a bullshit business model that puts everything behind a paywall, so let’s give Fox News some traffic:
Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden reportedly used racist language in a 2011 email describing NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith while he was a commentator at ESPN.
Gruden’s email was obtained by The Wall Street Journal on Friday and included remarks about Smith’s facial features.
“Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin tires,” Gruden wrote in the email, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In 2011, Gruden was a commentator for ESPN after his first stint with the Raiders and years after he won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The email was sent to then-Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen in the midst of the lockout.
The NFL told the WSJ they are “reviewing Gruden’s status with the Raiders for potential discipline.”
“The email from Jon Gruden denigrating DeMaurice Smith is appalling, abhorrent and wholly contrary to the NFL’s values. We condemn the statement and regret any harm that its publication may inflict on Mr. Smith or anyone else,” said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.
And the Raiders are investigating too:
“The content of an email regarding DeMaurice Smith from Jon Gruden when he worked for ESPN 10 years ago is disturbing and not what the Raiders stand for. We were first made aware of the email late yesterday by a reporter and are reviewing it along with other materials provided to us today by the NFL. We are addressing the matter with Coach Gruden and will have no further comment at this time,” said Raiders owner Mark Davis.
Gruden denied any racism claiming that he has always referred to liars as having “rubber lips.” He said in that instance, he took things “too far.”
“I was upset. I used a horrible way of explaining it,. I don’t think he’s dumb. I don’t think he’s a liar. I don’t have a racial bone in my body, and I’ve proven that for 58 years,” said Gruden.
Gruden’s explanation is pretty lame, I mean who ever heard of the term “rubber lips” to describe a liar? I guess it could be used for people who stutter since their lips would be bouncing up and down, but liars doesn’t make any sense.
That being said, who cares? Since when is insulting the size of someone’s lips a racist trope? Not all black people have big lips and not all people with big lips are black. We went through this same crap earlier this week when some white news guys got shit-canned for wearing “afro” wigs because according to cancel culture, only black people have curly hair.
Now if Gruden has used the term “N-word lips” that would be racially insensitive but he didn’t do that.
It doesn’t matter if something is racist or not, just that if the left thinks it’s racist and they think everything is racist. Because of that, Jon Gruden is now on the endangered species list. I don’t know if he’ll be fired but he’s definitely going to have to take racial sensitivity training and be forced to grovel on his knees for forgiveness.
