“Busted” is maybe the wrong word here. An anti-gun California lawmaker tried to bring a loaded firearm through a TSA checkpoint, which is usually a crime. In this instance however, the gun-hating democrat had his firearm temporarily detained and then returned to him when his trip was over. It must be nice to be on the right side of liberal hypocrisy.
Jim Cooper is a democrat California Assemblyman, which is a fun way of saying he’s opponent of the 2nd Amendment. In fact, he authored a “ghost gun” bill and has an “F” rating from the NRA. As a democrat, he believes gun control laws are only for the little people and don’t apply to him.
The Sacramento Bee reports that Cooper tried to bring a loaded handgun through the TSA checkpoint at the Sacramento International Airport, earlier this month. According to The Sac Bee, “the loaded semiautomatic gun was found in a purse.” The dude carries a purse with a gun in it? Kinky.
The procedure when the TSA finds a gun is to notify the law enforcement agency in charge and in this case it was the Sacramento County Sheriffs. They responded by storing Cooper’s gun in a lock box and returning it to him days later when his trip concluded. He was not arrested, issued no fine, and didn’t have his firearm confiscated.
The Sacramento County sheriff’s office explained why Cooper got off with no penalties. According to Sgt. Rodney Grassmann, Cooper is an ex-cop and, “sometimes there are exceptions granted for retired law enforcement officers to carry a concealed weapon.”
But there aren’t any exemptions for retired law enforcement to carry loaded guns through TSA checkpoints, which is what Cooper did. That’s against the law every time. Well, expect this time.
According to federal law, this crime carries a $3,000 to $10,000 for first time offenders. $10,000 being for if the firearm is loaded, which it was.
Even California law says that any person attempting to bring a firearm into a secure area of the airport is subject to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. There are no exemptions for ex-law enforcement.
And yet, Cooper walked free and got his gun back.
Cooper’s office was asked to comment and they at least tried to set the record straight about the democrat’s purse:
“There is nothing ‘murky’ about the law. That’s why his firearm was returned to him by the Sheriff’s department. The gun was in his male messenger bag which looks like a purse,” said spokesperson Skyler Wonnacott.
He’s right, there is nothing murky about the law: Cooper should have been arrested, fined, and lost his weapon. The “murk” here is that he faced no punishment whatsoever.
Also, if it looks like a purse, it’s a purse.
Cooper is a typical democrat hypocrite. He wants to impose Unconstitutional gun control laws upon the people but has no intention of following any of them himself. The best law that anyone could pass would force democrats to abide by the bullshit laws they pass. Suddenly, there would be a lot less bullshit laws from democrats.
