TULSA, Okla. — A curfew for downtown Tulsa around the area where President Donald Trump’s rally is set to take place Saturday has been lifted, the president said in a tweet.
Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum had previously issued an executive order, placing a curfew around the site of the rally, which would be free of vehicles and pedestrian traffic, starting Thursday night at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday.
After the rally, the curfew was going to continue from Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday. However, President Trump said in a tweet Friday afternoon that he spoke with Bynum, who informed him that there will be no curfew Friday night or Saturday.
“I just spoke to the highly respected Mayor of Tulsa, G.T. Bynum, who informed me there will be no curfew tonight or tomorrow for our many supporters attending the #MAGA Rally. Enjoy yourselves - thank you to Mayor Bynum,” the president said in the tweet.
Officials with the City of Tulsa said in a news release that on Friday, Secret Service asked the city to lift the curfew order, according to KJRH. Bynum made the following statement on the matter, KJRH reported: "Last night, I enacted a curfew at the request of Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin, following consultation with the United States Secret Service based on intelligence they had received.
Today, we were told the curfew is no longer necessary, so I am rescinding it."
