STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State University Board of Regents on Friday voted unanimously to remove the name “Murray” from all buildings on campus.
The halls are named for Gov. William Murray, who had a record of advocating for racist policy, including segregation and Jim Crow laws, officials said.
“The history associated with this building’s namesake has hurt many and is not consistent with our values of equality and justice for all,” OSU A&M Board of Regents Chairman Tucker Link said in a statement.
OSU President Burns Hargis previously sent a letter to the board, requesting that they vote to remove the name “Murray” from Murray Hall and North Murray Hall on campus.
University officials are expected to remove "Murray" signs from the buildings Friday afternoon.
